Our Origin Story

Hi, I’m Jeremy (@imjermee on social media) – and this is how Roll for Dinner came about.

In the summer of 2024, a new TikTok trend called “candy salads” was all over my For You Page. The concept was simple: a group of people each introduced themselves while pouring their chosen candy into a big bowl to create a “candy salad.” One evening, while grocery shopping, I found myself in the candy aisle and thought it would be fun to make one of my own, but instead of it being a group of people, it would just be me over and over again. I couldn’t stop chuckling about this as I filled my cart with candy. The next morning, I asked my wife Jocelyn to film me. She laughed and rolled her eyes, knowing I’d never been big on social media or even made a TikTok before. We filmed it, posted it—and it went viral! Encouraged by the response, I made another one, this time a “chocolate candy salad,” and it went viral again.
I kept making these “salads,” and video after video garnered tons of likes and shares, and soon I had a following. While the salads were playful and entertaining, I knew I couldn’t just keep making random concoctions forever. I love cooking and enjoy feeding people, and now I had a platform to share that passion. I began transitioning to sharing real recipes and food reviews, while still making salads. The whole family got involved in brainstorming content ideas, and one day my older son suggested we “Roll for Salad”, inspired by other creators we had seen. It was such a fun way to let fate decide the outcome, and maybe stumble across some exciting unexpected combinations.
I went to the store and bought tons of ingredients for all the different components of a salad. Starting with the base, then the protein, cheese, fruits and veggies, dressing, and a little “wild magic”. We filmed a few videos and really enjoyed it, which started a series. I’ve had some great salads, as well as some terrible combinations (like garlic ranch dressing paired with freeze dried bananas).
But the real magic happened at dinner. One night, stuck on meal ideas, I took a look in the fridge and of course there were tons of ingredients for my Roll for Salad videos.I called the boys over and grabbed the dice and roll sheets. I told them that they get to Roll for Salad. Their eyes lit up and they took turns rolling for each component of the salad. Now to be honest, we did reroll a couple times because this was not for a silly video for the internet, it was for our dinner and needed to be edible. We ended up with mixed greens, sliced turkey, provolone, apples, cucumber, raspberry vinaigrette and pecans. We put the salad together, and they were ecstatic about it and absolutely devoured it.
If I’d just made and served that same salad? Mutiny. But because they “chose” it (okay, the dice did), it was a thrill. Jocelyn and I exchanged astonished looks at their delight. It was a lightbulb moment. If rolling dice could make salad exciting to a five and ten year old, what else could it do? And just like that, Roll for Dinner was born.
Kids crave agency. As parents, we’re traffic cops—“Eat veggies, don’t lick the dog”—but giving them playful control changes everything. So we spent over six months crafting Roll for Dinner: testing components, designing graphics, tweaking rules, and asking friends (and followers!) for feedback. Now, it’s not just a game—it’s a way to turn “Ugh, dinner again?” into “What’s the dice gonna pick?!”

We’re proud, grateful, and still laughing at the fact that a viral candy stunt led here. Thanks for joining our table. Let’s roll!
